This family has a very special place in my heart for many reasons…
I moved to Erie, PA in 2011 in hopes to get away from the hustle and bustle that is New York City and the Tri-State area. I was moving because my soul-mate lived in Erie and the long-distance status was just difficult to manage. If you ever have taken a 12 hour bus ride or had to make multiple connections at different airports in order to arrive at your destination, well then, you understand what I mean.
I didn’t have a plan or a job, but I saw this as an opportunity to start over in a new city. As luck would have it, everything fell into place once I settled in Erie. My boyfriend introduced me to friends and in turn, those friends helped me grow accustomed to living away from my family. Of course, no one can ever prepare you enough for a winter in Erie, but that’s a whole other story we can get into later.
Months after the move, the Gonzalez family came into my life in the most spontaneous way. I had been a member of a national baby-sitting site for several years, an obvious choice considering that I had previously worked as a life-guard, camp counselor, and sitter throughout high school and college. Well, it turns out that Erika, mother of these two wonderful children, contacted me about a full-time nanny position and so we scheduled a time to meet in person. As soon as I met Mikey and Victoria, I knew that I wanted to be their nanny. Of course, Victoria was 2 months and Mikey was turning 2 very soon. Therefore, I anticipated that being a full-time nanny would have its challenges, but I was ready.
The Gonzalez family instantly made me feel like a part of their family. However, with them moving away in October, I am saying goodbye to this chapter in my life. I’m also saying goodbye to the people who I have grown so close with and the children that have taught me more than I could have ever taught them.
Having seen these children blossom into these intelligent and brave little people has really been an honor. The love of children and family is the best love you will ever know. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Love strengthens all bonds and this family along with my family and many others I have met through the years has put that in perspective. Of course, life will take you through ups and downs, helping you learn how to value that love. Yet, don’t let that hinder you from taking a leap of faith every now and then.
